Introduction: What Is an Attitude, and Why Does It Change?
Must knowAn attitude is a relatively stable evaluation of a person, object, group, or idea—it has a direction (positive or negative) and a strength. It's your mental "rating" of something. Attitudes matter on the MCAT because they predict behavior, and the exam tests how they form, shift, or are resisted.
The tripartite (ABC) model. An attitude has three components:
- Affective: feelings ("snakes scare me")
- Behavioral: actions or tendencies ("I avoid hiking where snakes live")
- Cognitive: beliefs ("snakes are dangerous")
These are usually consistent but can diverge; questions often ask you to label which component a statement reflects.
When Do Attitudes Actually Predict Behavior?
Must knowThe attitude–behavior link is real but conditional. The classic cautionary case is LaPiere's study (1934): a Chinese couple was served at nearly every U.S. establishment they visited, yet most of those same places later said in writing they would refuse Chinese guests—stated attitudes did not match behavior. Attitudes best predict behavior when they are specific, strong and accessible, and when behavior is aggregated across many occasions (principle of aggregation) rather than judged from a single act.
Passage-levelHow attitudes form. The mere exposure effect (Zajonc): repeated exposure to a stimulus increases liking, even without reinforcement. Katz's functional theory: attitudes serve psychological functions (e.g., expressing values, defending the ego, organizing knowledge, gaining social approval); persuasion works best when it targets the function an attitude actually serves.
The three frameworks to master are the Elaboration Likelihood Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and the cluster of cognitive, message, and social factors that drive attitude change.
Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM)
The Core Idea: How Hard Is Your Brain Working?
Must knowTwo people read the same medication ad. One is a physician evaluating every claim; the other is a tired commuter who just notices the trustworthy-looking doctor in a white coat. Both may end up liking the medication—but by completely different roads.
That's the Elaboration Likelihood Model (Petty & Cacioppo). "Elaboration" is the cognitive effort you invest in scrutinizing a message. Persuasion runs along two routes depending on how much elaboration occurs.
The Two Routes
Must knowWhen elaboration is high, people use the central route: they analyze argument quality. Strong arguments produce attitude change that is durable, resistant to counter-persuasion, and predictive of behavior; weak arguments can backfire. The central route requires both:
- Motivation (the topic is personally relevant), and
- Ability (cognitive resources, knowledge, no distraction).
When elaboration is low, people use the peripheral route: they rely on peripheral cues rather than argument quality—source attractiveness, credibility/expertise, authority signals, social proof, mood, or sheer number of arguments. This change is weaker, more temporary, and more easily reversed later.
The key logic: either low motivation OR low ability pushes you to the peripheral route. Even a smart person takes the peripheral route on a topic irrelevant to them—ability alone is not enough.
Quick check: A student gets a flyer urging her to switch phone carriers. She is about to renew her contract (high relevance) and has time to read carefully. Which route, and what arguments work best?
Answer: The central route (high motivation + high ability). The flyer needs strong, logical arguments (cost savings, data)—weak arguments would backfire.
Social Cognitive Theory
Learning by Watching: Bandura's Framework
Must knowSocial Cognitive Theory (Albert Bandura) holds that people learn and change attitudes/behaviors by watching others, not only through direct experience—observational learning or modeling. The classic demonstration is the Bobo doll experiment: children who watched an adult aggressively beat an inflatable doll reproduced that aggression themselves, even without any direct reward—showing learning can occur through observation alone.
Know the logicFour processes of observational learning. For modeling to produce behavior: attention (notice the model) → retention (remember it) → reproduction (be able to do it) → motivation (want to). Motivation is driven by vicarious reinforcement: seeing a model rewarded increases imitation; seeing one punished decreases it.
Self-Efficacy: The Confidence Variable
Must knowSelf-efficacy is a person's belief in their ability to execute a specific behavior. It predicts whether people attempt a behavior, how persistently they pursue it, and how they handle setbacks. Low self-efficacy → avoidance and early abandonment; high → persistence and resilience. Its strongest source is mastery experiences (past success); others include vicarious experiences, social persuasion, and interpreting one's own arousal. In a health context (high-yield), a patient who believes she cannot quit smoking won't engage with cessation programs regardless of her stated desire.
Reciprocal Determinism
Must knowReciprocal determinism: behavior, the person (cognitions, self-efficacy), and the environment continuously and mutually influence one another—you are neither purely a product of your environment nor purely your internal states.
Quick check (scenario): A teenager watches a popular athlete receive enormous praise for practicing daily, then practices more, improves, and feels more confident. Which Social Cognitive Theory components appear?
Answer: Vicarious reinforcement (praise motivates imitation), observational learning/modeling, mastery experience building self-efficacy, and reciprocal determinism (behavior change feeds back into self-beliefs and environment).
Factors That Affect Attitude Change
This broad cluster covers how attitudes shift, organized around three sources: changing behavior first, the message/source, and social factors.
Changing Behavior to Change Attitudes: Cognitive Dissonance
Must knowBehavior can change attitudes, not just the reverse. When you act against your attitude, you feel cognitive dissonance—the discomfort of holding two inconsistent cognitions (Festinger, 1957). People reduce it, often by changing the attitude to match the behavior.
The classic study: Festinger and Carlsmith paid participants 20 to tell someone a boring task was interesting. The **20 group had enough justification (the money), so little dissonance. Dissonance is amplified when the behavior is freely chosen, has real consequences, and cannot be undone.
Self-perception theory (Bem) explains the same findings differently: lacking direct access to our attitudes, we infer them by observing our own behavior—just as we'd judge a stranger. It applies especially when attitudes are weak or ambiguous (low prior strength).
Quick check (scenario): A student who is environmentally indifferent takes a conservation internship for the resume value. By August she genuinely cares about the environment. What explains this?
Answer: Cognitive dissonance—she freely chose pro-environment behavior inconsistent with her prior attitude and resolved it by updating the attitude. Self-perception theory also fits: she inferred her attitude from her behavior.
Characteristics of the Message
Know the logicSeveral message variables shift attitudes:
- Framing: messages emphasize gains or losses. Fear appeals work only when paired with a credible, specific action plan; fear without efficacy produces avoidance and denial.
- One- vs. two-sided arguments: a two-sided refutational message (acknowledge then refute the opposing view) is more persuasive for educated or skeptical audiences; one-sided works for already-sympathetic ones.
- Primacy and recency: first items are remembered (primacy), as are last items (recency). A delay before assessment favors primacy; no delay favors recency. Most often tested in impression formation.
- Inoculation theory (McGuire): exposing people to weakened counterarguments, then refuting them, builds resistance to future persuasion—like a vaccine.
Quick check (scenario): A campaign says vaping causes lung disease but gives no advice on quitting. Teens feel scared but keep vaping. What's the issue?
Answer: The fear appeal lacks an efficacy-building action plan. Without a sense they can act, recipients cope through denial or avoidance rather than change.
Characteristics of the Source and the Sleeper Effect
Must knowAttitudes change more when the source is credible, expert, and trustworthy; attractiveness also acts as a peripheral cue (ELM peripheral route).
The sleeper effect. A low-credibility message may fail initially but become more persuasive over time, because people forget the source (the "discounting cue") faster than the content. It's one of the few cases where persuasion increases with time. Forewarning: telling recipients in advance that a message means to persuade them increases resistance (they prepare counterarguments).
Characteristics of the Target
Know the logicRecipient differences shape how much change occurs:
- Need for cognition: people who enjoy effortful thinking use the central route more, so strong arguments persuade them more.
- Personal relevance / involvement: high involvement pushes toward the central route.
- Existing attitude strength: strong, certain attitudes resist change.
- Psychological reactance (Brehm): when people feel their freedom is threatened, they may do the opposite of what's requested. "You must believe X" can backfire.
Quick check (scenario): A pharma company sends identical drug letters to two physicians: one high in need for cognition, one skeptical of all pharma marketing. Predict each response.
Answer: The high-need-for-cognition physician processes centrally—persuaded if the data are strong, not if weak. The skeptical physician may show reactance and resist regardless of argument quality.
Social Factors: Norms, Conformity, and Compliance
Must knowAttitudes form and change in a social context.
Social norms are unwritten rules about acceptable attitudes/behaviors. Descriptive norms = what most people do; injunctive norms = what people should do. People update attitudes to match perceived norms (normative influence).
Conformity (Asch's line experiments): people report obviously wrong judgments to match the group—especially under unanimity, large groups, and high need to belong. This reflects normative social influence (wanting to fit in) vs. informational social influence (believing the group knows better).
Compliance techniques (all exploit commitment and consistency):
- Foot-in-the-door: small request first, then escalate. Works via consistency/self-perception.
- Door-in-the-face: large request first (refused), then the real smaller one. Works via reciprocal concession.
- Low-balling: gain agreement on favorable terms, then add costs; prior commitment sustains follow-through.
Quick check (scenario): A volunteer first asks commuters to sign a parks petition (most agree), then a week later asks the same people for a donation. Signers donate more. Which technique?
Answer: Foot-in-the-door. The small commitment shifted self-perception ("I support parks") and created consistency pressure that raised later compliance.
Intention as a Behavior-Change Factor
Passage-levelAttitudes reach action through behavioral intention, which reflects three already-covered factors: attitude toward the behavior, subjective norm (perceived social pressure), and perceived behavioral control (belief one can act—closely parallels self-efficacy). Takeaway: even a favorable attitude and supportive norms won't produce behavior if the person doubts they can act, so building perceived control/self-efficacy is central to behavior-change interventions. (The formal Theory of Reasoned Action / Planned Behavior is developed elsewhere; here it matters only as the attitude → intention → behavior chain.)
Common Confusions & Tricks
ELM central vs. peripheral—it's motivation AND ability, not intelligence. A brilliant professor takes the peripheral route on a tax policy she's never thought about (low motivation); an average person takes the central route about their child's school (high relevance). The route is situational, not a trait.
Cognitive dissonance vs. self-perception theory. Dissonance requires felt tension—most active when a strong attitude is clearly contradicted. Self-perception applies when attitudes are vague or weak (you infer them from behavior). Strong pre-existing attitude → think dissonance; ambiguous attitude → think self-perception.
Don't reverse the sleeper effect. It means low-credibility messages increase in effectiveness over time as the source is forgotten. It is NOT high-credibility messages fading. A classic exam trap.
Foot-in-the-door vs. door-in-the-face: watch the first request. Foot-in-the-door starts small (commitment/self-perception); door-in-the-face starts large (reciprocal concession).
Social cognitive theory ≠ behaviorist social learning theory. Bandura added cognitive processes (attention, retention, self-efficacy) that pure behaviorism ignores. If you see "self-efficacy," think Bandura.
Descriptive vs. injunctive norms. Descriptive = Description of what people Do. Injunctive = what people should do (injunction = command).
Forewarning → increased resistance almost always (people prepare counterarguments).
Reactance ≠ counterargument. Reactance is an emotional/motivational response to threatened freedom—a person may boomerang to the opposite position because of the threat itself, not logic.
