Attributing Behavior to Persons or Situations

When you see a stranger snap at a passerby, your mind instantly asks: Is that just who this person is, or did something push them to it? This process — deciding whether behavior stems from internal character or the surrounding situation — is called attribution, and it sits at the heart of social cognition. The MCAT tests the biases that warp this process and your ability to apply them to scenarios.

The Foundation: What Is Attribution?

Must know

Attribution is the process by which people explain the causes of behavior — their own and others'. Fritz Heider launched the field, drawing the distinction that still anchors every question here:

  • Dispositional (internal) attribution: behavior explained by something inside the person — personality, character, ability, attitude. "She yelled because she's short-tempered."
  • Situational (external) attribution: behavior explained by something outside the person — context, pressure, luck, circumstance. "She yelled because she'd been awake 36 hours."

Heider's insight: humans act like naïve scientists — we observe behavior and reach a causal verdict, but our reasoning is systematically biased, and those biases are what the MCAT tests.

Kelley's Covariation Model

Must know

Harold Kelley formalized this for cases where we have repeated observations. He used three dimensions to decide between a dispositional and situational attribution:

The pattern: High consensus + high distinctiveness + high consistency = situational. Low consensus + low distinctiveness + high consistency = dispositional.

Quick check: Your professor is rude only to you (low consensus), rude to students in every class (low distinctiveness), and has always been this way (high consistency). What attribution do you make?

Answer: Dispositional — the rudeness is the professor's character, not the situation.

Jones and Davis: Correspondent Inference Theory

Passage-level

When you observe a single behavior and infer the person's true disposition (a correspondent inference), you're more likely to make a dispositional inference when the behavior is freely chosen, produces non-common effects (outcomes other actions wouldn't), and is low in social desirability (acting against what's expected). The intuition: kindness to a boss tells you little (everyone does it); complimenting a widely disliked stranger reveals real character.


Attributional Biases: Systematic Errors in Judgment

The Fundamental Attribution Error

Must know

The most tested concept here is the fundamental attribution error (FAE) (coined by Lee Ross): our tendency to overestimate dispositional factors and underestimate situational factors when explaining other people's behavior. You see someone cut in line → "what a rude person," not "maybe there's an emergency."

Know the logic

We automatically generate a dispositional judgment first (fast), then are supposed to correct for the situation (slow, effortful). When distracted or cognitively taxed, we skip the correction. The FAE is also called correspondence bias because we infer behavior "corresponds" to character when it may not.

Quick check: A student arrives late to an exam; the professor concludes the student is irresponsible. The student blames unusually heavy traffic. Which bias is the professor's judgment, and which pattern is the student's self-explanation?

Answer: The professor commits the fundamental attribution error. The student's situational self-explanation reflects the actor-observer bias, covered next.

Actor-Observer Asymmetry

Must know

The actor-observer bias captures an asymmetry in perspective:

  • As the actor, you make situational attributions for your own behavior — you know your history, stress, and pressures.
  • As the observer, you make dispositional attributions — you see only the behavior, not the context.
Know the logic

The asymmetry is driven by information availability and attentional focus — actors look outward at the situation, observers look at the actor. Swapping perspective (watching a video of yourself, imagining the other's situation) weakens it.

Quick check — scenario: You trip on a sidewalk crack and think "that crack is ridiculous." Your friend thinks "she's so clumsy." Identify each attribution type and the bias.

Answer: You (actor) make a situational attribution; your friend (observer) makes a dispositional one. This is the actor-observer asymmetry.

Self-Serving Bias

Must know

The self-serving bias is attributing your successes to internal factors and your failures to external ones, protecting self-esteem.

  • Ace an exam → "I'm smart and studied hard." (dispositional)
  • Fail an exam → "The test was unfair." (situational)

This is the reverse of the FAE: when judging yourself, you flip the usual bias depending on outcome. A related move is self-handicapping — creating situational excuses in advance (e.g., going out the night before a test so a failure can be blamed on no sleep).

Quick check: An athlete credits a win to "hard work and natural talent," then blames a loss on a knee injury she rarely mentioned before. What bias is this?

Answer: Self-serving bias — internal for success, external for failure.

The Just-World Hypothesis

Must know

Melvin Lerner identified the just-world hypothesis: the belief that people get what they deserve. It's a motivational need — believing the world is fair helps us feel safe and in control.

The dangerous consequence is victim blaming: observers think an assault victim "shouldn't have been there" — a dispositional attribution that protects the belief that they would never suffer the same fate. Passage-level highly relevant to passages on healthcare disparities, discrimination, and social inequality.

Quick check — scenario: A jury decides a robbery victim "was asking for it" by wearing expensive jewelry in a high-crime area. Which concept explains this?

Answer: Just-world hypothesis (victim blaming) — a dispositional attribution about the victim that preserves belief in a fair world.

Hostile Attribution Bias

Must know

Hostile attribution bias is interpreting ambiguous actions as intentionally hostile (someone bumps you — accident or deliberate? People high in this bias assume malice). It's linked to aggressive behavior — note the attribution → emotion → behavior chain.

The Role of Culture in Attributions

Must know

Culture is the key moderator of attribution, and the MCAT tests it explicitly:

  • Individualistic cultures (e.g., US, Western Europe) emphasize personal agency and internal traits → more prone to the FAE.
  • Collectivistic cultures (e.g., East Asian, many Latin American and African societies) emphasize interdependence, roles, and context → more situational attributions, less FAE.
Know the logic

Cross-cultural work (e.g., Joan Miller) shows dispositional thinking increases with age in individualistic cultures but situational thinking increases in collectivistic ones — so the FAE is culturally learned, not universal.

Quick check: Asked to explain a peer's aggressive outburst, American participants emphasize a "violent personality"; Japanese participants emphasize recent family stress. What does this illustrate?

Answer: The role of culture in attribution — individualistic cultures favor dispositional explanations; collectivistic cultures favor situational ones.


How Self-Perceptions Shape Our Perceptions of Others

Your sense of self colors how you interpret others — the same interpretive lens you use on yourself, you apply to them. Passages regularly embed this.

Self-Perception Theory

Know the logic

Daryl Bem's self-perception theory: we infer our own attitudes by observing our own behavior, much as we'd observe a stranger (notice yourself at the library nightly → "I must value studying"). MCAT relevance: the link is bidirectional — your self-concept serves as a template for interpreting others, so if you read your own charity as genuine generosity, you read theirs that way too.

Projection and False Consensus Effect

Must know

The false consensus effect (Ross) is overestimating how common your own attitudes and behaviors are in the population: "I'm like this, so others probably are too." Projection is the related tendency to attribute your own unacceptable feelings or motives to others (someone feeling hostile perceives others as aggressive). Both show how self-perception bleeds into other-perception.

Passage-level

Optimism bias (unrealistic optimism): believing you're personally less likely than others to suffer negative events and more likely to enjoy positive ones. Because you judge yourself against an inflated baseline, you rate others as more at-risk. Relevant to health-behavior passages — it explains why people underestimate personal risk and skip preventive care.

Social Comparison Theory

Know the logic

Leon Festinger's social comparison theory: lacking objective standards, we evaluate ourselves by comparing to others. Upward comparison (to someone better-off) can motivate but harm self-esteem; downward comparison (to someone worse-off) protects self-esteem but breeds complacency. This shapes how you see the comparison target — downward comparison can exaggerate their flaws; upward comparison can overattribute their success to talent.

The Halo Effect

Must know

The halo effect is when one positive quality casts a "halo" that inflates ratings of a person's other, unrelated qualities (an attractive person rated as more intelligent and competent). The inverse is the horn effect ("devil effect"): one negative trait drags down perception of all others.

Order Effects: Primacy and Recency

Must know

In impression formation, the primacy effect (information learned first weighs most) usually dominates — early traits set a frame through which later ones are read, which is why first impressions are durable. The recency effect (most recent information dominates) is more likely after a delay or when early information has faded.

Quick check — scenario: A hiring manager interviews two equally qualified candidates. The first is attractive and makes a strong first impression; the manager rates that candidate's "analytical ability" as excellent despite identical résumés. What bias is operating?

Answer: The halo effect — a positive overall impression inflates ratings on unrelated attributes.


How Perceptions of the Environment Shape Our Perceptions of Others

The context we place people in alters how we judge them — the flip side of the dispositional lens.

Priming

Must know

Priming is the activation of concepts, memories, or schemas that influence subsequent perception without conscious awareness. Just read about violent crime → you're more likely to read an ambiguous shove as aggressive. The person didn't change; your activated interpretive context did. This is the MCAT's theme of situational forces shaping judgment in subtle form.

Schemas and Stereotypes as Environmental Filters

Know the logic

A schema is a mental framework — a cognitive shortcut that organizes information and fills gaps with assumptions. We have schemas for situations, roles, and groups. Stereotypes are schemas applied to social groups: learn someone is a "high school dropout" (an environmental label) and schema-driven expectations about motivation and intelligence rush in. The environment hands you a category; the schema supplies the "character."

Situational Cues and Construal

Know the logic

Construal is how we subjectively interpret a situation — the same objective environment can be read very differently depending on cues. Minor situational cues have large behavioral effects, and observers routinely underestimate this.

Passage-level

Good Samaritan study (Darley & Batson): seminary students en route to give a speech passed a person slumped in distress. The strongest predictor of helping was whether the student was in a hurry — not their religiosity. Situational time pressure overrode disposition, yet observers would judge non-helpers as "callous" (the FAE in action).

Quick check — scenario: One group reads about a generous mentor, another about a cutthroat competitor; both then evaluate the same ambiguous behavior of a stranger. What predicts the difference, and what concept does it illustrate?

Answer: Priming — the readings activated different schemas (generosity vs. competition) that colored interpretation of the ambiguous behavior. Situational environmental input shaped perception of another person.

The Stanford Prison Experiment and Situational Power

Passage-level

Zimbardo's Stanford Prison Experiment is the canonical demonstration that environment and assigned roles can overwhelm individual character: randomly assigned "guards" became abusive and "prisoners" submissive within days. For attribution, the lesson is that the situation generated extreme behavior that observers would attribute to dispositional cruelty — a powerful argument for considering situational power. Zimbardo's term for this is the Lucifer Effect.


Common Confusions & Tricks

1. FAE vs. Actor-Observer Bias — don't conflate them.
The FAE is about observers overestimating disposition in others, full stop. The actor-observer asymmetry adds the comparison: actors explain their own behavior situationally. If a question asks about an observer judging someone else harshly, that's FAE. If it contrasts what the doer thinks vs. what the watcher thinks, that's actor-observer asymmetry.

2. Self-Serving Bias is not the actor-observer bias.
Self-serving bias depends on outcome (success → internal; failure → external). Actor-observer bias depends on role (actor → external; observer → internal). A student who fails and blames the test is showing self-serving bias, not actor-observer asymmetry — there's no observer in the picture.

3. Just-world hypothesis ≠ defensive pessimism.
Just-world thinking says victims deserve their fate. It's not about protecting yourself from failure; it's about maintaining the belief that the world is fair. Watch for passage language about victim blaming or "they should have known better" — that's your signal.

4. False consensus vs. false uniqueness.
False consensus = overestimating how many people share your views/behaviors. False uniqueness = underestimating how many people share your abilities (we think our skills are more special than they are). Both involve self-to-other projection but in opposite directions. False consensus is more commonly tested.

5. Halo effect ≠ confirmation bias.
Halo effect: one good trait inflates perception of all other traits in a person. Confirmation bias: you seek out information that confirms a prior belief. They can work together, but they're distinct.

6. Cultural attribution: "collectivistic = situational" is the rule.
If a question describes a culture that emphasizes family, community, and social harmony, expect more situational attributions. If it describes individual achievement and autonomy, expect more dispositional (and more FAE-prone) attributions.

7. Priming is environmental, not just mood.
Students often confuse priming with emotion or motivation. Priming is about activating a schema or concept — the environment loads a mental frame that colors perception of others. It operates largely below awareness.

8. Correspondent inference = you infer character matches behavior.
Jones and Davis's correspondent inference theory is about deciding when behavior is a reliable window into character (disposition). The key triggers: free choice, non-common effects, low social desirability. This is distinct from the FAE, which is a bias; correspondent inference theory is a model of when dispositional inferences are logically justified.
